The Orwell prize for political writing is awarded annually to two
writers, one for journalism and one for a book, who are judged to have
best achieved George Orwell’s aim “to make political writing into an
art”.
The nominations are:
The Observer’s chief political commentator, Andrew Rawnsley;
Mary Riddell, now an assistant editor at the Daily Telegraph;
Observer columnist Nick Cohen;
Independent columnist Johann Hari;
The Economist’s defence and security editor, Anton La Guardia;
and veteran presenter Clive James was nominated for the Orwell journalism
prize for three editions of A Point of View on BBC Radio 4.

DICKENS REMEMBERED?
In 1869, a year before Charles Dickens died, he wrote in his will
that he wanted to be remembered for his work alone. No plaques, no
statues, “no monument memorial or testimonial whatever” were to be
allowed to commemorate the life of one of Britain’s greatest authors.
Now, almost 140 years after his death, Dickens’ final request has
sparked an impassioned debate among his most ardent fans – and his
family are suggesting his dying wish be laid to rest.

The judging panel for the 2009 Man Booker International Prize is
announced today. The writer Jane Smiley will chair an eminent panel
consisting of writer, academic and musician, Amit Chaudhuri, and
writer, film script writer, and essayist, Andrey Kurkov.

The Oxford Literary Festival will be held at Marquee, Christ Church, Monday 31st March 2008. This has got to be worth £7.50 of anybodies money.
